The Historic
District in Fernandina Beach encompasses a 50 block area in the downtown
section. It was named as an Historic District in the National Register
of Historic Places because of the high concentration of structures dating
from the latter part of the 19th century.
The Florida Railroad Company platted the town and issued the first
map of Fernandina in 1857. In 1876, fire destroyed the original buildings
from from the docks to 3rd street. Another fire, in 1883, destroyed
the south side from 2nd to 3rd street.
There are many beautiful homes from the turn of the century that have
been restored to their original condition.
