Amelia Island Lighthouse was first lit in 1820 in Cumberland,
Georgia and was moved to Amelia Island in 1838. It is
constructed of brick and stucco. The lighthouse is 64' tall, has a third order
Fresnel lens, which was installed in 1903. It marks the entrance to the
St. Mary's River near Fernandina Beach on Amelia Island. The lighthouse is still
in use, but unfortunately it is not open to the public. It is currently owned and
managed by the U.S. Coast Guard.
The lighthouse can be viewed from Atlantic Avenue near
Egans Creek. Drive west on Atlantic Avenue from the beach, and watch for the
marsh, creek, and lighthouse on your right. It is very difficult to photograph
since it is located a great distance from the road - the lighthouse pictured
here is not the Amelia Island lighthouse, it is a small replica on North Fletcher
Street.
